More "DP News"

The familiar monotonous drone of the USPS truck going around the neighbourhood delivering mail was a source of nervous excitement for me these past two days.I'd stand by the window peeking through the blinds and watch the mailman put the mail into our mailbox and wait for him to leave. Then, I'd rush out,get the mail and as I walked back to the front door, I'd leaf through the envelopes to see if what I'd been waiting for was here or not. And today, it came...DP's step 2 score report was finally here!
I opened the envelope praying for it to be an awesome score and thats exactly what it was, alhamdulillah!DP scored an amazing 96/238 on his step 2 exam!! I couldn't be happier or be more proud of him!I called him to let him know the good news but not surprisingly his cell phone was turned off...it being his wedding today. So, I've shot him an email with his score in the subject line (as per his instructions) so he won't have to wait for the page to load (and have a minor coronary..heh).Its his valima tomorrow but knowing him he'd log in to check his mail and find out about his score and I bet it'll more than double his joy!

viscous:Congratulations to DP indeed! Well, you can't go further than a 99 on the double digit score.I've known of people hitting the 270s on the three digit score(and thats the highest I've heard/seen till now). The average step 2 score...the mean, I believe is 221 (corresponds to an 89 on the two digit I think).

thats really competitive! or maybe once the students have their MD's or MBBS's the averages tend to inflate? I might be wrong cuz I dont know what is minimum requirement for resideny matches?

viscous:It is competitive but I am not quite sure what you mean when you say the averages get inflated. The averages I quoted are for first time test takers for US and Canadian med schools....I guess what you're saying is that when IMGs(international med grads) take the exams they already have their degrees in hand and are perhaps at an advantage and do better at these exams? If so...well..you can't really make a generalisation because theres so much more other than being a graduate that may effect your test score...for one may be a stellar student back home and just be a lousy test taker when it comes to tests like these.Hope that answered yur question.Oh and the minnimum score requirements vary by specialty and then by residency program policy for cut-offs....so can't really generalise there..but scores are what will get your application reviewed and not filtered out by the pre-set filters that programs have and then whether or not you get interviews will depend on your application as a whole.

rai:Done.

thanks. can you help me in finding some official data that shows how many Canadian MD's go to the US for specialties? Also, is there any data set available for how many Canadian undergrads get into US med schools? might be totally irrelevant to you, but I thought maybe you would have some knowledge.

viscous:I don't know if there is official data for Canadian MD's as a seperate entity...they would all be grouped under the IMG umbrella. You can find data for the percenta ofge IMGs matching for 2007 and mebbe even previous years at the following website (click on "data tables" under the header "Main Residency Match") :

www.nrmp.org

Not sure about the data set for Canadian undergards getting into US med schools but here are a few links you might find useful(that is if you haven't browsed through them before) :

Also found this...its dated but worth a look I guess :

You might also want to do a search for the data tables at :

Good luck!
